Description. A table and chair with place setting. On the table a bible verse is carved that reads:

“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. “

As an aspiring furniture maker I was drawn to the idea of creating a piece that would fit in a Norman Rockwell painting. That dining table surrounded by the perfect happy family. Despite this romantic idea, when examined, you often find an oppressive patriarchal tradition upheld by the word of God.

In this piece I am confronting the patriarchal ideas I grew up with and was taught to believe, ideas that were oppressive and isolating. The conception of this piece started with me looking at what brought me to woodworking and craft, which was the woman who raised me. Many generational forms of craft are overlooked or devalued since they are seen as an expected part of taking care of the family and community.
